Talks and Panels
Talks and Panels
- Talk - Computers and Thought Award: AI and Economics for a Healthier, Safer, and Fairer World
Talk by Ariel Procaccia.
Tuesday 28th - 08:30 to 9:30hs. Room LB.
Explore the broad and exciting interaction between AI and economics, which spans the spectrum from deep theory to deployed applications in healthcare, physical security, and dispute resolution. -
Talk: Managing your Supervisor
Talk by Toby Walsh, UNSW Australia and NICTA
Tuesday 28th - 9:40 to 10:40 - Catalinas Room
To get the most out of your PhD, you need to take charge of your relationship with your supervisor. In this interactive session, we will cover a number of topics: understanding your supervisor
(as a first step to managing them), manipulating them, expectations, pitfalls, conflict, and your overall research career. Whilst many of the topics are focused on the PhD-supervisor relationship, much
holds true for other similar relationships like that between PostDoc and supervisor. Please come and share your questions and problems. - Talk: The Economic Implications of Machine Intelligence: Lessons from the Second Machine Age
Talk by Erik Brynjolfsson via Skype
Tuesday 28th - 14.00 to15.00 hrs - Room C
We should be optimistic about the future because technological progress, 'the only free lunch that economists believe in,' is accelerating quickly past our intuitions and expectations. But we should also be mindful of our values and our choices: as technology races ahead, it may leave a lot of people, organizations and institutions behind. - Talk: Killer robots, the end of humanity, and all that: What should a good AI researcher do?
Talk by Stuart Russell
Wednesday- 14.00-15.00 hrs - Room C
Hear an update on the campaign to ban lethal autonomous weapons, as well as the fears that AI poses an existential threat to mankind. - Talk: "John McCarthy Award"
Talk by Bart Selman
Thursday - 8:30 to 9:30, Room LB
Professor Selman is the winner of the 2015 inaugural John MCarthy Award. He is recognized for expanding our understanding of problem complexity and developing new algorithms for efficient inference.
- Talk:"A One Hundred Year Study on AI: Reflection and Discussion"
Talk by Barbara Grosz. Chair of the AI100 Standing Committee.
Thursday - 14.00-15.00 hrs - Room GH
The One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence, or AI100, is a 100-year effort to study and anticipate how the effects of artificial intelligence will ripple through every aspect of how people work, live and play. - Talk: "Robust and beneficial AI"
Elon Musk recently donated $10M to the Future of Life Institute to fund research into robust and beneficial AI. Come along to this session to hear a summary of the first 37 grants awarded ($7M) to kick off this research programme and ask questions of many of the grantees.
Thursday, 15.10-16.30. Room GH. - Machine Learning Track - Invited Sister Conference Presentations
Tueday, Thurday and Friday.
- Yan Liu - "Fast Spatio-temporal Analysis via Low Rank Tensor Learning"
- Luc De Raedt - "Languages for Mining and Learning"
- Stephen Muggleton - "Learning as Interpretation"
- Huan Liu - "Employing Machine Learning to Help Verifying Research Hypotheses"
- Kristian Kersting - "The Democratization of Optimization"
- Animashree Anandkumar - "Tensor Methods: A New Paradigm for Training Probabilistic Models and Feature Learning"
- Elad Eban - "Discrete Chebyshev Classifiers" - Panel: "Countering Discrimination"
Friday 31st, 14:00-15:00 at Room GH
This interactive panel will explore how different communities within AI face discrimination and how we might counter this. Please come, share and learn. - Panel: Who speaks for AI?
Panelists: Maria Gini, Barbara Grosz, Francesca Rossi, Stuart Russell, Manuela Veloso
Chair: Michael Wooldridge
Wednesday 29th, 15:10 at Room LB2 - Panel: "Rethinking Turing Test"
Friday, July 31st 2015. 10:40-12:10, Room R1.
The Turing test was considered a grand goal to be achieved by generations of Artificial Intelligence researchers. It has helped inspire many new ideas and has also been the subject of many debates. Now over 60 years old, we wish to take a fresh look at the test given the current surge of interest and achievement in artificial intelligence, examining its origin and projecting beyond the horizon. The panel consists of researchers with different perspectives on what artificial intelligence has achieved so far and what more needs to be done. In particular, the debate will be centered on whether the Turing test will continue to serve as the signpost for developing intelligent machines, or perhaps other candidates are emerging to serve that purpose. - 2014 Artificial Intelligence Dissertation Award sponsored by ECCAI awarded to:
Benjamin Kaufmann, University of Potsdam
for his thesis:
"High Performance Answer Set Programming" http://www.eccai.org/diss-award/current.shtml
under the supervision of Prof. Torsten Schaub.
